Two long-time friends fall in love with one another. But when the boy's father makes headlines for having a hidden relationship, their connection is severely strained.“Sandhippoma” (1998), a romantic film directed by Indrakumar. Starring Suriya, Preetha Vijayakumar, Radhika Prakash Raj and Sarath Babu. The film’s central narrative arc follows Vishwa and Nilani, two Insta friends who decide to marry after meeting each other only a few times. Their romance is tossed into war when a disturbing truth about Vishwa’s dad’s extramarital affair pops up just before their wedding, breaking their connection and confidence.
The narrative juxtaposes Vishwa and Nilani’s developing romance, oozing with the youthfulness and innocence of love, a powerful escape route, with the social, communal, and familial tensions churning in the surrounding atmosphere. It doesn’t help matters that Nilani’s mother vehemently opposes their union, and things come to a head when Vishwa, for art’s sake, exhibits high-fashion portraits of Nilani, further raising hackles. As their love comes under fire, a disturbing event stemming from Vishwa’s father’s past extramarital affair deeply disrupts their futures and brings intense emotional conflict to their connection.
Trapped between feuding kinfolk and social bigotry, the star-crossed lovers fight to remain together. In a last-ditch effort to free herself from the conflicting expectations, Nilani decides to run away, prompting both families to desperately race to prevent her from making a choice. There was nothing wrong with these guys that they didn’t need to stop it, but unfortunately for them, they couldn’t stop. Nilani kills herself by taking poison concealed in her ring, and Vishwa runs into a wall and loses his mind.
“Sandhippoma” goes on to become the most emotionally devastating ballad imaginable, one dealing with fidelity, family conflict, and jealousy with a harrowing sincerity. When paired with understated but impactful performances, the film is tremendously effective at showcasing the shame and guilt that clouds each character’s existence and drawing you into their orbit. Although the film ends as a horrifying fable, it’s an exquisite meditation on the wonder and vulnerability of emotionally charged relationships, and the cost incurred by failure to communicate, lingering with viewers via its coarse but nearly poetic narrative.
