Sarpatta - 2021
Sarpatta Parambarai is a 2021 Tamil sports action film written and directed by Pa. Ranjith, set in the politically volatile 1970s of North Madras. The movie delves into the rich culture of boxing prevalent there and traces the enmity between two clans of boxers: Sarpatta and Idiyappa.
The film traces the life of Kabilan (Arya), a diligent Dalit worker who aspires to be a boxer like his deceased father. Despite his mother's strong opposition to his boxing interest, Kabilan is supported by his godfather, Kevin Daddy (John Vijay), and soon attracts the attention of Rangan (Pasupathy), the Sarpatta clan's coach. After beating a talented retired boxer, Dancing Rose (Shabeer Kallarakkal), Kabilan is offered an opportunity to fight Vembuli (John Kokken), the intimidating champion from the opposing clan.
During the highly anticipated game, political tensions escalate since an emergency has been declared in the nation. The sport is left alone by the police and hooligans, making it incomplete. After a series of personal and political reversals, such as imprisonment and alcoholism, Kabilan loses his direction and drifts away from his fantasies and family.
Years afterwards, Kabilan yields to nostalgia and returns to boxing after seeing his erstwhile rival Vembuli win again. Against all opposition from his people as well as declining physical fitness, he trains extensively under a past Sarpatta boxer, Rayappan. Inspired anew, Kabilan obtains his rematch. Vembuli proves unbeatable throughout the first several rounds and even hurts Kabilan, yet thanks to backup from his clan members and close relatives, Kabilan rises to a grand comeback and knocks out Vembuli, hence, at last, reinstating pride into the Sarpatta clan.
Sarpatta Parambarai is a gritty, emotional, and extremely cultural sports drama. Arya is as good as Kabilan, essaying strength and vulnerability with equal depth. Pa. Ranjith weaves together action, caste politics, and local pride with a gripping underdog story. The film has powerful performances, striking visuals, and a poignant journey of redemption.
