Directed by Balu Mahendran, Sathi Leelavathi is a 1995 Tamil comedy film. The film centres on Arun, a married man who begins an affair with Priya, stemming from his discontent with his wife, Leelavathi, whom he considers unattractive and overweight. Once Leelavathi finds out about the affair, she joins forces with Dr. Sakthivel to get Arun back to her side.
Arun was married to Leelavathi in an arranged marriage, and they had two children. Ashok’s ashamed of his wife being too plain and tries to navigate around her social shortcomings by cheating on her with Priya, a construction worker, without disclosing that he’s married. They decide to take a vacation trip to Bangalore, where Arun, by coincidence, meets his childhood friend Sakthivel, travelling with his family. Arun tries to hide Priya during the trip, but when he gets hurt, Sakthivel discovers the affair but keeps it a secret.
Once back in India, Priya finds out that Arun is married with children, but remains with him when he says he wishes for a divorce. The affair is discovered by her even in the vacation pictures clicked by Sakthivel’s son, which leads to her breakdown. Arun then moves out to live with Priya. With encouragement from her friends, Leelavathi starts sending their children to Arun and Priya’s house, making Priya hate Arun. In the end, Priya makes up with old flame Raja, and they apologise, while Arun finds his match in Leelavathi.
Sathi Leelavathi is a masterpiece of humour and heartbreak that strikes hard with its cleverness while keeping it real with everyday home life. Besides its quick pace and funny timing, the film manages to have a good amount of fun while still dipping its toe into topics like how we view ourselves and our value in relationships. It strikes a perfectly entertaining balance along the way, packed with an action-movie wow-factor that leaves a lasting cinematic impression. Performances, clever writing, and more keep it as one of the best in Tamil comedies ever, keeping it on the radar of fans even 30 years after its release.
