“Sinamkol” is a 2020 Tamil-language war drama by director Ranjith Joseph. “Sinamkol” is a Sri Lanka-India co-production by the producers Raja Jayakulasingham, Karikalan, and Gayathiri Ranjith. The main casts of the film are Aravindhan, Narvini Dery and Leelawathy.

It is the story of ex-Tamil Eelam soldier “Amudhan” (Aravindhan) who exits from the detention camp ordered by the regime of Sri Lanka at the end of the civil war. Broken, lost, and pining for his family, Amudhan embarks on a hopeless quest to locate his wife and daughter whom he lost during the war. As he travels through his ravaged homeland, marked once by violence and oppression, he also faces the misery of his people who are fighting hard to start all over again in an unfriendly regime.

Meanwhile, there is a Tamil diaspora family visiting Tamil Eelam for a re-connection with the roots. This journey, however, takes them into a grim reality of the post-war world-displacement, oppression, and loss of identity. Theirs is a parallel run to Amudhan's in the search that hurts and fails to heal with time.

In a way, Amudhan is fighting on two fronts-the struggle to eliminate the forces that are destroying the identity of his people and the inner battle against himself through memories and trauma induced by war and survival. His journey may not be limited to the reasons for which he is searching for his family but for hope and survival itself.

The story is, of course, not only one of loss but also survival and strength. This post-war scenario among the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka shines bright through the very political message in the book “Sinamkol”.
