“Soodhu Kavvum 2” is an upcoming 2024 Tamil action-comedy film written and directed by SJ Arjun, featuring Shiva, Karunakaran, and Yogi Japee. The sequel to the 2013 blockbuster Soodhu Kavvum, the movie traces a gang of kidnappers who have their own peculiar rules, but land in greater trouble than anticipated.

The plot is about “Guru” (Shiva), who gets out of prison and is willing to recommence his offbeat kidnapping business. With his old faithful first-aid kit stocked with booze, he reunites his crew and goes about making quick money. Things, though, go awry when they find themselves caught up in dirty politics, a revenge scheme, and a strange mystery surrounding a killed imaginary girlfriend, Ammu.

While Guru attempts to outwit his foes, the gang finds itself in ridiculous situations; a fake kidnapping that goes awry, an imaginary girlfriend on an operating table, and a drunken hallucination about snakes. At the same time, a murder connected to “Das's” (Vijay Sethupathi) imaginary girlfriend contributes to the mayhem, leaving Guru to try and determine what is reality and what is fantasy.

Though it sought to recapture the original's charm, “Soodhu Kavvum 2” fights an uneven plot, uneven visuals, and punchlines that seldom land. Tossing between prequel and sequel elements in its attempt at blending, the narrative fails to have the novelty and originality that made the first film a cult classic.

Now available on Amazon Prime Video, the movie has a blend of black humor, crime, and satire, but misses the magic of its original.
