Sumathi Valavu (2025) is a supernatural psychological drama by director Vishnu Sasi Shankar. It features Arjun Ashokan, Malavika Manoj, Sidharth Bharathan, Sshivada, Gokul Suresh and Abhilash Pillai. The film is about Appu, a sceptical courier man, and Deepa, a passionate researcher, who uncover long-buried secrets behind a deadly village road bend called Sumathi Valavu. As Appu and Deepa dig deeper, they discover who Giri is, and along with Giri's help, the truth they discover transforms their lives and village forever.

The dangerous bend in the road in a sleepy Kerala village is known as Sumathi Valavu, after a woman who died at the curve many years ago. Some people say that her spirit is still there and continues to have an impact on the area, causing accidents and other strange occurrences to materialise. Appu, a deliveryman working in the village, did not believe in ghosts until one day he received a handful of old letters and packages from anonymous senders. Most of which were addressed to people who died decades ago. When Deepa, a researcher from the city, arrived in town to study the legends surrounding the bend, Appu decided to cooperate and find out for himself.

He and Deepa meet an old man named Giri who has always lived in the village. He tells them about his grandmother, who was a friend of Sumathi's and knew what happened. Sumathi was betrayed by her lover, and died at the bend, heartbroken. When her soul died, filled with anguish, it never could rest. Appu, Deepa, and Giri decide to finally have a ritual by placing Sumathi's possessions at the curve. That night, the winds blew strangely, and the lights flickered, yet after the ritual, it all calmed. There would not be any further accidents at Sumathi Valavu. The road was now safe again, and Sumathi's story had finally settled.

Sumathi Valavu, released on August 1, 2025, is a beautifully haunting film that you will continue to be affected by after the credits have rolled. The film slowly draws you in, where silence says more than words, and every stare can mean something so deep. Without making loud statements, Sumathi Valavu channels real emotion and tumultuous internal battles to create a thoughtful experience, rather than one of thrill. It is one of those kinds of stories that impact you subtly and quietly.
