Theerpugal Virkapadum

“Theerpugal Virkapadum” (2021) is a Tamil vigilante thriller film directed by Dheran, starring Sathyaraj. The movie is about Dr. Nalan Kumar, an esteemed and upright gynaecologist who practices at a government hospital who becomes a resolute vigilante after a ghastly accident rocks his family.

“Nalan” (played by Sathyaraj) is a soft-spoken, mature individual who has earned a reputation for his morality and devotion to his medical career. His life is, however, turned upside down when his married daughter falls victim to a ruthless attack. When he attempts to look for help from the authorities and police, his calls for justice go unheard. Upset at the breakdown of the system, Nalan turns vigilante.

He kidnaps Rudhravel's son and orders that some missions are to be done in order to save the boy's life. When Rudhravel and his violent nephew Rajendran begin to probe for the motive of the kidnapping, they learn of Nalan's painful motive. In a suspenseful encounter, Nalan discloses the boy's life is at stake on retrieving an amputated body part within time. This sinister stipulation heightens the tension in the already tautly structured story.

What ensues is a cat-and-mouse game, with the hunter not being a professional fighter but an old father who wants justice. Rudhravel has to face the repercussions of his past, while Nalan has to race against time to convey a message that cannot be ignored.

“Theerpugal Virkapadum” is remarkable for its unflinching storyline and Sathyaraj's powerful performance. It balances emotional depth with moral complexity, depicting how a law-abiding citizen who is even-tempered can be driven to the limits. Although there are moments of hyperbole and brutal violence, the film does succeed in passing on a strong message regarding justice, accountability, and the lengths to which a person will go to safeguard the ones he cares for.
