“Thirumalai” (2003), directed by Ramana, is a romantic action film, and it features Vijay, Jyothika, Raghuvaran, and Manoj K. Jayan. The film is about a mechanic, Thirumalai, who falls in love with a rich young woman; soon she also falls for him. But her father denies their relationship, and he tries to break them up.

Thirumalai, a rugged, ill-mannered but soft-hearted mechanic, leads a carefree life in Chennai with his friends but shares a close bond with his neighbours, Selvam and Nagalakshmi, an elderly couple. As a Vaishya, Thirumalai felt it was his duty to honour his family’s association with appearing as a wealthy supporter of the arts and educating poor girls, so he adopted Nagalakshmi as his sister. Thirumalai falls in love with Shwetha after falling for her on New Year’s Day. Initially, Shwetha resists the connection and vows to her father, Ashok, who owns half a dozen TV channels, that she has never heard of him. The despondent Thirumalai attempts one ridiculous wooing tactic after another to get Shwetha to notice him.

One day, one of Thirumalai’s friends runs away with his lover from her wedding. Thirumalai accompanies them to the wedding destination and manages to impress the girl’s father as well as her fiancé, allowing the girl to marry Thirumalai’s friend instead. Only after getting to know him, especially his true, good nature does Shwetha reciprocate his feelings. Ashok becomes infuriated at their connection because of his high rank and orders Arasu, a criminal organization, to kill Thirumalai.

Threatening Thirumalai, Arasu kidnaps his neighbours and friends. Later, Arasu releases the kidnapped neighbours and friends after realizing Thirumalai's goodness and decides to change his ways, a decision that is not supported by his aide, Dass. Dass can turn Arasu’s men against him to complete the destruction of Arasu and Thirumalai. Thirumalai, after a series of twists and turns, resolves the initial problem and is able to get Ashok and Shwetha back together, leading to Ashok learning from his mistakes.
