“Thookudurai” is a 2024 Tamil-language comedy-drama film, directed by Dennis Manjunath, starring Yogi Babu, Ineya, and Mahesh. It is a funny and messy chain of events linking an elopement of many decades ago to a robbery in the present in a village.
A team of ordinary robbers, consisting of three, sets out to steal a god's crown from a temple. Their carefully planned robbery, however, takes an unexpected turn when they discover that it is linked to something that happened twenty years ago, when a couple from the same village attempted to elope. As the robbers try to get out of trouble, a series of bizarre and humorous misadventures follow, leading to shocking revelations about the past.
The film attempts to combine comedy, drama, and horror aspects into it, offering a mix of slapstick humor and thrilling moments. Yogi Babu is the main attraction with his own kind of comedic sense, keeping the audience entertained through his quirky body movements and witty one-liners.
While Thookudurai starts on an intriguing note, it cannot sustain a gripping narrative. The film relies very much on exaggerated humor and pop culture references, of which there are a few references to actor Ajith. The references do not fill the story with substance and instead read more like distractions than meaningful inclusions. Although some of the humor works, it is more due to the performances of the actors and not so much the script per se.
The story appears to be unbalanced, at times changing between several tones without aim. With a good start, the movie does not fulfill its promise in its execution, presenting the audience with a comedy that is humorous at some moments but turns out to be forgettable. “Thookudurai” is amusing for some time but does not present an interesting, compelling story.
