Directed by S. P. Muthuraman, “Thoongathey Thambi Thoongathey” (1983) is a drama film with Kamal Haasan in dual roles and Radha, Sulakshana and Jamuna. The movie tracks a Harvard grad who, in dire need of employment, masquerades as a landscaper to get by. In the meantime, while working, he falls in love with his boss’s daughter. With his own family pushing him to wed one of their swains, things get messy for him.

Gopi is a carefree, unemployed youth from a middle-class background. Vinod, his twin brother, was brought up in a rich family overseas. Upon the rapid demise of Vinod’s father, Vinod returns to India to secure his inheritance. The estate manager, desiring the estate for himself, ensnares Vinod. He hires thugs and a fake doctor to drug Vinod over and over again, so he’s an addict, cut off from the outside world. Around this time, Gopi’s lover, Padmini and her father, a close friend of Vinod’s recently deceased dad, arrive at the estate for a brief sojourn. Padmini comes across Vinod and is horrified to find him in such a despicable state. She digs a little deeper and finds out that Vinod and Gopi are long-lost twin brothers, separated at birth.

Committed to rescuing both brothers, Padmini, with assistance from a trusted servant, swaps the brothers. She dispatches Vinod to recuperate in Gopi’s mother’s home while Gopi occupies Vinod’s position at the estate. Gopi courageously assumes the role, gradually assumes control of the estate matters. He reveals the entire secret of the estate manager’s scheme and the conspiracy. In the climactic fight, Gopi dispatches the manager and his goons, rescues the estate, and restores the family. Vinod, now recuperating, is grateful for his sibling’s bravery and vow of silence. It’s a happy ending, with good triumphing over evil, the family reunited, and Gopi and Padmini set to live happily ever after.

"Thoongathey Thambi Thoongathey" stirs emotion, suspense and powerhouse performances. Bolstered by a gripping plot centred around questions of identity, sacrifice and brotherly bonds, the movie keeps the audience hooked from beginning to end. Its blend of romance, intrigue and action is just right, and it’s both fun and substantive. Some catchy tunes and well-developed character arcs add to the effect of making this a rewarding and tear-jerking movie experience.
