“Udhay” is a 2019 Tamil action film by Tamilselvan. The film features Udhay and Leema Babu. Based on real incidents, the movie brings to light caste violence and the sad repercussions of honor killings.

The plot revolves around “Udhay”, a college-going student, who falls in love at first sight with a new student, “Leema Babu”. Udhay is a talented sketch artist and with the help of his friends, searches for her by drawing her portrait. The same day he found her and saw her being ragged. Stepping in to rescue her, he errands her trust. After several efforts to impress her, she falls in love with him and they begin a happy relationship.

Their love faces a brutal challenge when the girl’s father discovers their relationship. Enraged that Udhay belongs to a different caste, he looks her up and takes extreme measures to keep them apart. But love knows no bound Udhay and his girlfriend decide to run away, hoping to start a new life, especially after she learns she is pregnant.

Their escape also fails when her father tracks them down. The violent confrontation that ensues has Udhay fighting for the girl he loves, but is outnumbered and powerless as he is butchered by her father and his men. The tragedy represents the bleaker reality of honor killings on the basis of caste that afflict the society till today.

The film cuts to the current day. There is a boy who is sketching. His mother is reminding him about an examination. He leaves as she asks him for the drawing. She looks at it, being almost moved. It is a sketch of Udhay, his father, confirming that he has inherited his skill.

"Udhay" is a must-see film that gives a strong message against casteism and honor killings. It is based on a real-life story from South India and is a wake-up call to society calling for change.
