Directed by filmmaker duo J.D., Jerry, “Ullaasam” is an action drama film. It features Ajith Kumar, Vikram, Raghuvaran and Maheswari. The film centres on two boys who grow up under the influence of each other's fathers, shaping their contrasting paths in life. One becomes a talented singer, while the other turns into a local rowdy. Their lives collide unexpectedly when they both fall in love with the same girl during their college years.

Arms trafficking crime boss JK is the father of Dev, while Thangaiah, JK's neighbour and a bus driver, is the father of Guru. Guru, fascinated by JK’s activities, witnesses a murder and lies to the police, leading JK to take him as his protégé. Dev is raised by his grandmother, who hopes to instil good values in him. As they grow up, Dev becomes a college singer, while Guru becomes a dancer and is involved in crime.

Megha returns from America, befriends Dev, but is troubled by Guru's violent lifestyle. Eventually, she falls for Guru and encourages him to change. After Guru’s arrest and a violent incident involving Dhamodharan's men, both Thangaiah and Megha urge him to leave crime behind. Under JK's influence, Guru accepts a smuggling job. Things get complicated when Dhamodharan goes on the offensive, forcing Dev to come in like the cavalry. In the end, Dev chooses to produce Guru and Megha’s love story, following through on their love story and exposing the truth of their relationship. The tale ends in an exhilarating, action-packed rescue, after which Guru renounces his criminal ways for Megha, while Dev decides to give up his pursuit of her happiness.

“Ullaasam” is a powerful action drama that interrogates issues of identity, power and redemption. Through perfectly balanced opposing character arcs and emotional intensity, the film explores deeply the effect that childhood and decisions can have on one’s life. Filled with tension, drama, conflict, and moments of personal grace, it still manages to offer an inspirational story of transformation, sacrifice and spiritual awakening.
