Uzhaippali is a Tamil action drama film by P. Vasu, released in 1993. It stars Rajinikanth and Roja in the lead roles. The film tells the story of a stage actor hired by three crafty siblings to replace their wealthy mother’s estranged son in their plot to inherit her fortune. The story takes an unforeseen turn when he learns that the female is none other than his real mother.
Rajini is a hardworking factory coolie, a member of one of the primary producers of Indian society, living an honest and simple life. Until one day, he’s visited by three scheming brothers who tempt him to pretend to be a long-lost, foreign-returned scion to a major family fortune. At first, Rajini grumbles along with it and begins to play the role of the crook, but he often shies away from fully committing to the ruse, worried about the wrath that would come after. As he gets sucked deeper and deeper into this phoney family reunion, Rajini uncovers a shocking secret hidden beneath all of this ruse. He is the legitimate heir to the estate. His father was brutally murdered by these same brothers in their cold-hearted effort to usurp the inheritance, and the shock drove his mother insane, mentally unbalanced.
Determined to avenge the death of his family, Rajini goes down a dark path of revenge. Using equal parts ingenuity and muscle, he competes against each of the three brothers in succession, outsmarting their designs and eventually defeating and killing the three brothers to avenge the murder of his father. Even after he reclaims his rightful inheritance, Rajini continues to shock by turning his back on the wealth and influence that are now his. He decides to continue being the unassuming coolie he was, valuing honesty and humility over riches or high office. His story is one of beauty and heart, of purpose, justice and pride, of keeping it real when all the forces of industry and personal ambition urge you otherwise.
A story of absurd devotion and stunning violence, Uzhaippali is an action drama to the core, combining epic emotional stakes with visceral set pieces and unprecedented themes. Under the oppressive strictures of a Japanese internment camp, the film serves up unsparing performances and a riveting drama of justice, family, and identity. Its unique combination of brutal action, tender beats, and oddball surprises makes it impossible to look away.
