Vaazhai

Vaazhai" is a 2024 Tamil children's drama film written and directed by Mari Selvaraj. Disney+ Hotstar, Navvi Studios, and Farmer's Master Plan Production produced the film, starring newcomers Ponvel M., Raghul R., Kalaiyarasan, and Nikhila Vimal.

Based in 1998 in the village of Karungulam, southern Tamil Nadu, the narrative is about "Sivanaindhan", a clever but poor young boy. His family, as with many others, makes ends meet by cutting and loading banana bunches for paltry wages. Sivanaindhan wishes for a better life, but he is compelled into backbreaking labor to pay off his mother's debts. He and his best friend, Sekar, attempt to avoid work, but the weight of poverty continues to draw him back.

In the meantime, his older sister, "Vembu", falls in love with "Kani", a laborer who insists on being paid equally by the local merchant, "Muthuraj". Their struggle for fairness makes Kani lose his job and leads him to work with the laborers every day. Sivanaindhan one day pretends to be injured so that he may escape working and secretly goes to his school's annual dance show. Hunger and fatigue overtake him, however, and he faints by a pond.

When he comes to, he sees his village mourning. A lorry with workers, Vembu, Kani, Sekar, and Muthuraj, crashed, killing nineteen. The overladen truck, organized by money-hungry traders, covered them with a pile of bananas. While the village mourns, Sivanaindhan's mother is guilty of his pain. Starving and weak, he crawls into a banana plantation before falling again.

"Vaazhai" provides a tragic story of child labor, exploitation, and the realities of rural life. Mari Selvaraj weaves a moving narrative based on real-life scenarios, and thus the movie is enormously emotional. The gritty narration and engaging performances stand out, although the dark tone of the story leaves audiences with a feeling of sadness and introspection.
