"Viduthalai Part 1" is a 2023 Tamil political crime thriller written and directed by Vetrimaaran. It was produced by Elred Kumar under the label RS Infotainment and Grass Root Film Company. It stars Soori, Vijay Sethupathi and Gautham Vasudev Menon.

Based on the short story of Jeyamohan titled "Thunaivan," the film is set in 1987 and traces the ferocious confrontation between a government mission and a revolutionary organization in rural Tamil Nadu. Following a catastrophic train derailment that kills multiple passengers, the responsibility is on the extremist outfit Makkal Padai, which is against a mining company's encroachment on native lands. The government initiates Operation Ghosthunt to arrest the elusive leader of the group, "Perumal" (Vijay Sethupathi).

"Kumaresan" (Soori), a fresh recruit constable, joins the E-Company to help with the mission. He finds the cold reality of police work in the guise of law and order soon enough. While his job is to obey orders, Kumaresan is pained by the increasing violence against the innocent villagers. In the middle of all this, he falls in love with Tamilarasi "Pappa" (Bhavani Sre), whose grandmother he had helped once.

The tension is heightened as DSP Sunil Menon (Gautham Vasudev Menon) comes into the picture. Kumaresan inadvertently assists Perumal and his henchmen, reporting this to Chandran, who happens to be a mole. A botched assassination plot and a bomb explosion further raise the tension. When Pappa's grandmother gets killed in a violent police crackdown and Pappa gets arrested, Kumaresan is torn between justice and duty.

In an intense shootout, Kumaresan arrests Perumal hoping to save Pappa, but gets suspended for breaking rules. In a mid-credits turn of events, an embedded photographer takes evidence of stunning police brutality, and Perumal, now escaped, breaks up some scandal on the train attack.

“Viduthalai Part 1” moves steadily over two and a half hours, blending emotional depth with political tension. Vetrimaaran’s direction keeps viewers hooked with powerful moments and raw storytelling, leaving them eager for Part 2.
