“Visithiran” is a 2022 Tamil-language police procedural movie directed by M. Padmakumar, featuring R.K. Suresh and Poorna. Directed and produced by Bala and Siva Sekar Kilari, the film is the official Tamil version of the highly acclaimed Malayalam film “Joseph” (2018), which was also directed by Padmakumar.
The story concerns "Maayan" (R. K. Suresh), a former police officer who has taken voluntary retirement from the service. An erstwhile illustrious cop, Maayan today is a devastated man, a drunkard, a chain smoker, and terrorized by guilt. The miserable loss of his daughter and separation from his wife, "Stella" (Pooma), have devastated him emotionally. His life dramatically changes when he gets news about Stella having an accident and landing up in the hospital.
As Maayan arrives to see her and begins piecing together the evidence, he senses a nauseating connection between Stella's accident and the death of his daughter. The parallels in both accidents compel him to wonder if they were coincidences or something else. Acting on instinct and grief, he chooses to investigate further, even though he is no longer a cop.
The investigation takes Maayan into the underworld of medical crimes and organ trafficking, revealing a powerful syndicate. What makes the case so personal is that it involves his own family. While uncovering horrific truths, he goes to extreme lengths to put the criminals behind bars.
The movie is an emotional and suspenseful investigative thriller, remaining faithful to the original. R.K. Suresh acts well, being both vulnerable and intense. There are some of the emotional moments which might have been explored more, but the movie succeeds in keeping the audience engaged with its fast-paced narration.
"Visithiran" is a strong remake that retains the soul of the original, presenting a close-knit, emotional journey into crime and desperation through the eyes of a broken but determined man.
