Yajaman is a rural action drama from R.V. Udayakumar, also made in 1993. It stars Rajinikanth, Meena and Aishwariyaa Bhaskaran. The story centres around Vaanavarayan, an admired village chieftain whose wedding to Vaitheeswari enrages his childhood enemy, Vallavarayan. Refusing to let his defeat stand, Vallavarayan undertakes a vengeful journey where he uses treacherous and villainous methods to bring ruin to Vaanavarayan’s life and happiness. What starts as a simple love story quickly becomes a heart-racing journey of betrayal and sacrifice, along with a testament to how great character can emerge from tragic personal loss.
Kandhavelu Vaanavarayan, a traditional feudal chieftain in a village outside of Pollachi, is known for his intelligence and the great loyalty his village holds towards him. Despite living with his grandparents, he leads his villagers to take pragmatic steps, like pooling the money meant for vote buying to enhance their lives rather than corruptly voting. His life is plagued by a toxic rivalry with Vallavaraayan, who desires not only Vaanavarayan’s power but his love, Vaitheeswari. When Vaanavarayan weds Vaitheeswari, Vallavaraayan’s envy takes a dark turn, as he enlists the village priest to poison the holy water, making it so that Vaitheeswari will never have children.
Despite the tragedy, Vaitheeswari pretends to still be pregnant with the assistance of a midwife to save her husband’s honour. The emotional toll becomes unbearably heavy, and amidst a typical celebration, she commits suicide, compelling Vaanavarayan to vow to wed Ponni. Grief-stricken, Vaanavarayan will not agree unless Ponni consents to marry Sembattai, Vallavaraayan’s closest henchman, who eventually turns on her. Furious over the injustices meted out to Ponni, Vaanavarayan faces Vallavaraayan in a dramatic duel. Rather than take vengeance on those who wronged him, he offers mercy, teaching his people a profound lesson on what it means to be a true leader who wins hearts through compassion instead of fear.
Yajaman is a red-blooded action drama that weaves allegory of love, loyalty and leadership into a rustic tale with rich traditions. Under the holding wings of kinship and ability, it paves the way for hugely influential rooms of aggression and loving emotion. With its enthralling chase sequences, memorable soundtrack, and magnetic confrontations, it’s the best film in the city vs nature genre, as it illustrates all the moral conflicts faced by those who are in control, privileged or powerful.
