The Calcutta High Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by Shantanu Mukherjee, grandson of freedom fighter Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, against the film The Bengal Files.

The plea, which objected to the portrayal of his grandfather in Vivek Agnihotri’s directorial, was heard by Justice Amrita Sinha, who suggested that the petitioner could seek information through the RTI Act instead of approaching the court.

Court suggests petitioner to seek remedy under RTI Act

The film has been facing challenges in West Bengal, where it has not seen an official release despite being screened across other parts of India and having an international release on September 5, 2025. Shantanu Mukherjee had raised concerns regarding how his grandfather’s legacy was represented in the movie.

Justice Sinha, while dismissing the petition, maintained that the court was not the proper forum for addressing such grievances and encouraged the petitioner to pursue other legal remedies.
