The biographical film on revolutionary freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh has been in the works for a long time. In fact Bollywood filmmaker Shoojit Sircar was to make this film about two decades ago but it didn’t materialize then. It is also interesting to know that the Piku director wanted the late actor Irrfan Khan to play the role of Sardar Udham, while the actor’s son Babil was to play his younger version. The latter was to make his film acting debut with the film.

Things went haywire when Irrfan turned down the role owing to his ailing health and his son too exited from it. Film producer Ronnie Lahiri said, “I saw Babil when he was in school. Irrfan wanted us to meet because there was a point where for this film ('Sardar Udham'), he was supposed to play a younger version for Irrfan sir.” Meanwhile the film will now be made where Vicky Kaushal will play the titular role. Babil on the other hand is working with Lahiri on an undisclosed project. He added, “Honoured to take forward your legacy Irrfan sir. Worked with a legend like you, And now Babil. If this is not Providence, what is?”
