Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has strongly defended filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri and his upcoming political drama The Bengal Files, set to release on September 5, 2025.

In a recent interview, Mithun praised Agnihotri for writing challenging roles for him, recalling their previous collaborations in The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022).

Actor backs filmmaker amid controversy

In the latest installment, Mithun essays a partially mute old man in present-day Kolkata, a survivor of the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings. Speaking about his role, the actor revealed it was one of the toughest characters he has ever played. “My character’s tongue was tortured, making speech almost impossible. He calls people mad and eats from a dustbin. It took time to master the way he speaks,” Mithun said.

The senior actor also criticized the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, for allegedly obstructing the trailer launch of the film last month. “How can one stop a trailer launch without even watching it? It was a planned conspiracy,” he claimed.

The film, co-starring Anupam Kher as Mahatma Gandhi, promises to present a hard-hitting narrative based on historical events. Produced by Pallavi Joshi, The Bengal Files is part of Agnihotri’s controversial cinematic universe.
