The singer Rekha Bhardwaj has opened up about her hit song Namak from the 2006 film Omkara and how she was not getting ‘enough of work’ before its release. The singer has emphasised that she is comfortable singing any kind of song irrespective of its genre.
Rekha Bhardwaj’s Take On ‘Namak’ Song
In a formal conversation with News18, the singer said, ‘It took me very long to rediscover that mischievous as well as the naughty side of myself through this song. I had lost all confidence when I was first asked to sing it, but Vishal believed in me. He played back a recording of me singing it casually and motivated me by saying ‘Only you can sing this.’ It gave me the push that I definitely needed. Until that time, I wasn’t getting much work done. That song truly made me realise my true potential.
Rekha’s strong Take On ‘Item Numbers’
While citing the example of Lata Mangeshkar’s song ‘Aa Jaane Jaan’, she said, ‘A song can be sensuous and still dignified, and if it isn’t aesthetic, I would not like to sing such a track. Other than that, any form is good to me. I have no doubts about singing an item song, but it doesn’t imply that I become cheap or anything of the sort. Item songs are part of our cultural expression. It is not about the form, but it’s mainly about how it is executed. Just look at Lataji’s Aa Jaane Jaan; these types of songs had a kind of grace, instead of the vulgarity.’

About Rekha’s Songs
Moreover, Rekha Bhardwaj has sung many other hit songs such as Genda Phool, Teri Fariyad, Dum Ghutta Hai, Mileya Mileya, Pehli Baar Mohabbat, Ghagra and Kabira.
