When Netflix arrived in India a decade ago, it began boasting of original programming of the biggest stars.  Whether it was Sacred Games to Bard of Blood , big names always found a space in Netflix shows and films.  Since then, there has been a marked increase in the Indian Netflix original stories as well be it the streaming of Maamla Legal Hai or something like the Dhindora.

Monika Shergill spoke about the importance of the story . The show on the streaming giant Netflix may not have superstars in some stories but still appeal to the masses if the story is good. Talking about this approach Monika Shergill the Vice President of Netflix India mentioned ahead of the 2026 slate launch.  Emphasizing that story has always mattered more for Netflix to greenlight any project. The casting and the story has to be appropriate and any of the titles should not be based only on the cast.  As she believes people appreciate great stories.

Monika says streaming is about very immersive viewing and how a story is  written or portrayed makes a big difference and its not about hierarchy of any medium it is how the consumers take it is how one consumes it.

The 2026 Slate on films or web series released

The 2026 slate has several stars such as Madhuri Dixit, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Deol and more. There is a balance in the stories and there are many amazing stories where the right casting across the biggest titles to the smallest have been since 2025.

Netflix has determined film releases according to its story and intent and many a times,  it has encouraged filmmakers to opt for a theatrical release instead.

On theatre release vs OTT

Monika said they have had active conversations with the creators when we suggest the film should be a theatrical release or we say this is an original and will actually fly better on streaming.  She spoke about Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila was to be a theatrical release before the plans changed but it was decided together when they felt it differently and Imtiaz Ali had liked the idea to take the journey differently.

She ended by saying Netflix does justice to the idea that story is more important by the creator.
