Satyajit Ray's 'Aranyer Dinratri' was screened in the Classics se Shuvendu Chatterjeection of the recently held 78th Cannes International Film Festival. The film was restored in a '4K' version. American filmmaker Wes Anderson, a follower of Satyajit, presented the film. Not only that, Wes was one of the leaders in the film's restoration. He carried out the restoration work for six years.

Two of Satyajit Ray's works are very popular in the West - one, 'Apu Trilogy' and second one is 'Charulata'. However, it goes without saying that 'Aranyer Dinratri' is no less studied. Many believe that a unique chapter in Satyajit's career began with this film. Most of the films he made before 'Aranyer Dinratri' focused on the past. From 'Aranyer Dinratri', Satyajit started to capture the present time. This film is about the story of 25-30 years after independence.

The audience will never forget a memory game scene in the film. The characters played by Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Ravi Ghosh, Shuvendu Chatterjee, and Samit Bhanj played a memory game during a picnic in the jungle. It is an iconic scene. Did you know that Wes Anderson himself imitated that scene? Wes 'copied' that scene in his film 'Asteroid City', released in 2023. While sitting in Cannes, Wes said, 'I stole Satyajit Ray's memory game scene. I used it in my film.' There was a look of satisfaction on Wes' face while saying this. He is a fan of Satyajit. He has said this more than once in more than one place. As a result, Wes paid tribute to Manikbabu by using a scene from 'Gurudev' Satyajit's timeless creation in his film.

In conclusion, let me tell you that 'Aranyer Dinratri' was released in 1970. The film is based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay. This time, Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, one of the artists of the film, were present at the screening in the Classics section of Cannes. Her daughter Saba Ali Khan went to accompany maa Sharmila. Everyone walked the red carpet. Sharmila was wearing a green sari. Saba was wearing a bright yellow traditional dress. This time, all eyes were on Sharmila and Simi at Cannes.
