The story opens on a rainy morning and we see old Coachman Ali leave his house and walk through the downpour. He transverses a path well known to him in those heavy rains to reach the post office where he has been coming for more then 5 years now. He awaits a letter from his daughter. He hasn't heard from her since she got married. The people in the post office consider him to be a mad man and make fun of him. A new post master who has recently arrived in town joins in on the fun. Perhaps knowing that he doesn't have much time left, one day Ali hands over his entire life's earnings to the Post Master with the promise that when his letter comes, the post master will deliver it to his grave. Thrown back by a request like this the Post Master is faced by a precarious situation.
