Rajesh Puri

Rajesh Puri has been a distinguished veteran in the Indian film industry. A veteran whose career spans over four decades across in television, cinema and theatre. He is best known for his versatility and his impeccable coming timing and for his portrayals as a common man for which he is much loved and most recognizable face from the golden era and from the start of the television in India.

Rajesh got his breakthrough in television with the soap, Hum Log. He rose to fame with India’s first soap opera, Hum Log that landmarked between 1984 to 1985 where he played the character of Lalloo a simple and naïve young man struggling to find a foothold from his middle-class family background. He was called lalloo and the name stayed on with his legacy of a character that every common man could resonate with the youth of the 1980’s.

His performance created a lasting impression and impact that he soon became a household name. After Hum Log he had continued success with another iconic role in the sitcom, Yeh Duniyan Gazab Ki where he played the man who refuses to tell a lie. He showcased his ability of comedic brilliance.

Rajesh Puri after his appearance in television carved a niche for himself in Hindi cinema. He appeared in over 130 films, as a supporting role or in a character acting in which he provided a vital comic relief to the storytelling with the main protagonist. Some of his most popular films are Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro released in 1983, Dil in 1990, Phool Aur Kaante in 1991 and Here Pheri in 2000 to which he had contributed to India’s most loved comedies.

Though he has had success on the big screen, he has stayed loyal to his roots, the theatre from where his art career in entertainment began. He has acted in numerous plays particularly in Hindi and Punjabi. His play Wrong Number still remains one of his most popular productions.

From door darshan where he essayed Hum Log, Rajesh Puri had successfully transitioned to modern television and in digital platforms. He appeared in popular shows such as Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, and most recent is the Shakti Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki. He has also been part of the OTT.
