“Aalavandhan” (2001) directed by Suresh Krissna is a psychological action thriller.It stars Kamal Haasan in two roles, alongside Raveena Tadon and Manisha Koirala.The film’s story focuses on the childhood trauma experienced by brothers Nandu and Vijay at the hands of their stepmother. Conflicted psychologically Nandu goes through an obsession and driven by the guilt of his past ends up deciding to kill Vijay’s fiancée whom he sees as a stepmother figure (enemy) just like his original stepmother was.

We follow Major Vijay Kumar, a Black Cat commando, as he goes on a rescue mission to save Indian tourists taken hostage by terrorists in Kashmir. Later, he is greeted by his girlfriend Tejaswini “Teju,” a news anchor, who informs him that she is pregnant. Vijay’s last gesture in normalcy is to temporarily abandon his fiancée to take a trip to see his twin brother Nanda Kumar, dubbed Nandu, who’s stuck in a mental asylum for killing their stepmom, Jayanthi. Nandu, suffering from schizophrenia, believes he must save Vijay and escapes after killing two inmates.

Once Vijay and Teju are married, they discover that Nandu has broken free. At first, Nandu’s doctor doesn’t believe it, once he’s persuaded by evidence connecting Nandu to the recent murders. Nandu, driven by hallucinations and a history of abuse, gets obsessed with murdering Teju. He also becomes involved with Sharmilee, but after a drug-induced event triggers dark memories, he murders her.

As Vijay and Teju take shelter at Vijay’s ancestral villa, they find Nandu’s journal, which uncovers their family’s bloody legacy. Jayanthi’s killer, Nandu, who has already murdered her once, hunts them down. In a climactic confrontation, he trounces Vijay, but eventually chooses to blow himself up to save his own pain.Later, when Teju herself is pregnant with twins, she fears what will happen to them. Vijay comforts her with the promise of an encouraging environment for their kids.

This haunting action thriller is perhaps one of the most intense Tamil films ever made, with cathartic performances and a sophisticated narrative that navigates trauma and mental illness. A gritty tale of two brothers blasted down the harsh road of fanaticism, the film’s psychological suspense meets harrowing driving and fight choreography. Its exploration of obsessive love, familial strife, and otherworldly sacrifice is just as harrowing as it is transcendentally romantic. Even with its heavy themes, the film expertly weaves drama with suspense, creating an unforgettable experience through poignant storytelling and exhilarating filmmaking.
