However, their marriage is marred by a housemaid's beating and their family's shame. Prameela moves to another town and becomes friends with Hema, who is happily married. Her cousin Murali returns from Singapore and seems to care for her, but reveals his selfish intentions. Heartbroken, Prameela agrees to marry an older, wealthy lawyer, but the marriage is terrible.
At their wedding party, she is shocked to see Balu working for her husband, Ammini, and his wife, Ammini. Ammini is heartbroken when a child tells her about Balu and Prameela's past, and she asks for a divorce from Balu. Prameela tells Balu to stop his advances and even though he confesses his love. When Prameela returns home, her husband demands a divorce, saying she's not good enough. She faints and learns she's pregnant. Her husband wants her back, but Prameela sees he only wants the child. She leaves him, taking only her belongings. Balu stands at the door waiting for her, while Prameela refuses him. Decided to walk away alone and ready for a peaceful life free of all past burdens.
"Aattuvanchi Ulanjappol" is a powerful story about a young woman who cannot escape the never-ending challenges in her life. It does a tremendous job of following her journey through family discord and self-betrayal. There is a story about love, family, self and societal expectations on a quest for independence, and it leaves one to consider what is freedom or happiness.
