Aval Appadithan (1979) is a melodrama by director C. Rudraiah. It features Sripriya, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Sivachandran. The film is about Manju, a strong woman shaped by past pain and betrayal, who struggles to trust men and fights against unfair treatment. Through her complex relationships with two very different men, she reveals her true self and faces the challenges of love, trust, and independence.
Manju, a bold and modern woman who has been deeply hurt by men in her past. Growing up, she faced abuse and betrayal, which made her lose trust in love and relationships. She now works for an advertising agency and frequently discusses openly how cruelly women are handled in society. She runs into Arun, a gentle and thoughtful documentary filmmaker working to better comprehend women's lives. As they spend time together, Manju shares her past, including how different men used her and left her broken. Arun listens sympathetically and starts to care for her, even develops feelings.
However, Manju also deals with her arrogant and sexist boss, Thyagu, who constantly disrespects women. She tries to appear interested in him to reveal his actual character, which stuns Arun. Manju ultimately openly chastises Thyagu to impart instruction. Confused by her actions, Arun marries someone else and continues. Manju, though hurt, stays strong and unashamed. A voice-over reflects that a part of Manju was lost today, but she will rise again tomorrow, only to face the same struggles all over again. Because, as the title says, that is how she is (Aval Appadithan).
Aval Appadithan examines difficult ideas of trust, treachery and women's emancipation. The strong performances, and honest depiction of flawed people in the movies provide a very moving experience. Still powerful is its brave treatment of gender issues and the hardships of women in a patriarchal world. It still strikes as a Tamil cinema classic thanks to its subtle narrative and unforgettable exchanges.
