“Azhiyatha Kolangal 2” is a 2019 Tamil drama film, written and directed by M. R. Bharathi. The film is a spiritual successor to the original “Azhiyatha Kolangal” rather than a direct sequel. It stars Prakash Raj, Revathi, Archana and Easwari Rao, delivering a story of love, friendship and societal judgment.

"Gowri Shankar" (Prakash Raj) is a renowned Tamil writer who has just been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book. His wife, "Seetha" (Revathi), tenderly packs his bags to leave for New Delhi, instructing him not to forget taking his medicine. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, "Mohana" (Archana), an English professor emeritus and widow, prepares to meet somebody secretly.

After 25 years, Gowri and Mohana meet once again in her apartment, having a talk laced with nostalgia, unspoken feelings and underlying tensions. Their words reveal a complex relationship; one that is more than friendship but never fully acknowledged as love.

As the series goes on, the actual turn of events occurs; Gowri Shankar collapses in Mohana's house suddenly. This creates turmoil in Mohana's life, subjecting her to brutal criticism. The neighbors, the police, the media and even her daughter query her values and motives, converting their secret rendezvous into a scandal.

During all the hullabaloo, Seetha is loyal to Mohana and terms their bonding as friendship, but the viewers know the intensity of the emotional bonding between Gowri and Mohana. The film explores society’s judgment, the complexity of Human relationships, and the thin line between love and friendship.

Despite a powerful cast including Prakash Raj, Revathi, Nasser and Archana, the film struggles with heavy dialogue and a slow pace. It intends to deliver a deep, emotional story, but lacks the cinematic impact to fully engage the audience. “Azhiyatha Kolangal 2” is a film with a thought-provoking message but falls short in execution.
