“Billa 2” (2012) Joined the ranks of an emerging Tamil Indian genre of action films, scripted and directed by Chakri Toleti. Starring Ajith Kumar, Vidyut Jammwal and Parvathy Omanakuttan, the movie is a prequel to Billa. It traces the ascent of David Billa, a young Sri Lankan refugee, who grows up to become one of the most feared underworld dons in Goa.
The film starts with David Billa (Ajith) arriving at a refugee camp in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, where he befriends Ranjith (Yog Japee), who is on the wrong side of the law. Billa is tortured and imprisoned by a corrupt police inspector, fueling his desire for revenge for his father's death. He moves to Chennai but is rejected by his blood sister and gets tricked into a diamond smuggling job. After killing corrupt cops during a delivery, he gains respect from Selvaraj (Ilavarasu), who introduces him to the criminal world. Billa later murders a city inspector and an immigration officer. His involvement in drug trafficking catches the attention of Abbasi (Sudhanshu Pandey), a major drug lord, who becomes his mentor.
As Billa rises in power, he develops a relationship with Abbasi’s mistress Sameera and stands up against Abbasi. After being betrayed, he kills Abbasi and becomes Goa’s top gangster. When his niece Jasmine (Nivetha Pethuraj) is murdered, Billa wants revenge against Dimitri (Vidyut Jammwal) and finally kills him, earning a permanent spot in the underworld alongside Ranjith.
“Billa 2” is an exciting action film that has the elements of a hit, combined with a dark and violent story about an antihero gangster. As Ajith Kumar, his performance is fully committed, selling us on his character’s transition from timid refugee to intimidating crime lord. Its story of ascending to power is deeply intoxicating, even if it sometimes lacks an emotional core. It’s the smartest move for masters and mistresses of dynamic and criminal serials.
