Deva by S. A. Chandrasekhar is an action romantic film. It stars Vijay, Swathi, Manorama, and Sivakumar. The movie's story takes us through the journey of a passionate couple who are shown to fall in love. Their happiness receives frequent opposition from the woman’s father, a strong village head. He is against their marriage, convinced that the suitor is unworthy of his daughter because of his shady reputation.

The story begins in a small village ruled by Rajadurai, a tyrannical leader who creates violent laws and tortures those who oppose him. When his younger brother Deva returns after eight years, he’s appalled to see the climate of terror and subjugation the villagers now experience. He soon encounters Bharathi, the headstrong daughter of a schoolmaster, Gandhidasan, who struggles and opposes Rajadurai’s oppression. Though Deva and Bharathi fall in love, their love story gets caught in the crosshairs of Rajadurai’s tyrannical governance.

As Deva comes to terms with his brother’s cruelty, the stakes are raised. Rajadurai’s machinations to get rid of Gandhidasan and his followers, who pose a danger to his authority. Trouble arises in the family when Deva announces his intent to marry Bharathi with his mother’s blessing, while his father Rajadurai demands that Deva marry their cousin instead. Rajadurai murders their mother while trying to settle a drunken argument. Once Deva finds out that Rajadurai has put a hit on fellow villagers, he fights and apprehends his brother to present him to the villagers. To enlighten Deva and save him from his vengeful intentions, Gandhidasan speaks to him. Eventually, Rajadurai is murdered by their uncle, Mayilsamy, who can bear Rajadurai’s oppression no longer, bringing justice to the village and relieving them of their fear.

Deva tells an engrossing story, full of action, romance and comedy, centred in village life that touches on themes of family loyalty, rival power bases and the struggle between right and wrong. Laced with strong emotional currents, with explosive confrontations and an undercurrent of real-life threat, the film walks a tightrope between sentiment and suspense without falling off. Combined with the musical stylings and performances, abundant dramatic tension is created. It is helped by its rural Americana setting, which adds authenticity. It’s a deeply felt film about justice, love, and resistance to tyranny set against the rich tapestry of a close-knit rural American hometown.
