“Devil” is a Tamil thriller horror movie directed and written by Aathityaa, starring Vidharth, Thrigun, and Poorna in the main roles. The movie revolves around betrayal, ghostly apparitions, and dark secrets from the past.
“Hema and Roshan” meet by accident after an accident, and Hema's tragic past is revealed. She was married to Alex, whose infidelity with his colleague Sophie had disastrous consequences. Evil triumphs as the story unfolds, distorting reality and the paranormal.
"Devil" is unlike most horror thrillers in that it manages to get by with good visuals rather than plenty of dialogue to generate suspense. Karthik Muthukumar's cinematography is well suited to capture the foreboding atmosphere, making even ordinary scenes tense. One such striking shot, of a character having a breakdown in his car, is shot in a way that looks like the car is suspended in an endless sea, capturing his turmoil to perfection.
But the film falters in genre balancing. The film is more dramatic in the first half, and only the thriller and horror later take center stage. There are moments that appear to have been added just for shock value and do not quite belong to the narrative.
While Mysskin's background score is well suited to the creepy atmosphere, some tracks like aly forced seduction sequence are wasted. The highest point of the film is in Poorna's performance: she adds depth to her character despite scenes that are substance-free. But while “Devil” benefits from her dedication, it does not meet her talent, thus ending up being an unbalanced horror thriller with plenty to be wished for.
