“Endrendrum Kadhal” (1999), directed by Manoj Bhatnagar, is an Indian romantic film starring Vijay, Rambha, and Raghuvaran. Filmed in Slovenia and Finland, the movie tracks Vijay, who meets and falls in love with Meenu on a business trip and woos her into marriage. The couple’s newfound happiness is short-lived, as Meenu’s brother forces Vijay to migrate out of India and live with Meenu’s family in Switzerland, introducing unforeseen complications into the couple’s lives.
Vijay, a popular, wealthy managing director of a shipping line, lives in peace in a traditional joint family with his strict father Sethupathi, two younger brothers and their wives and children, and his spinster elder sister, Pooja. On a business trip to Switzerland, he meets and gets involved with Meenakshi, the sister of his business partner, Nagaraj. Nagaraj agrees to the match, but he demands that Vijay remain in Switzerland after marriage, arguing that India is an unsuitable place to live. Vijay, not wanting to abandon his family, refuses the offer and goes back to India.
Shekar and Meenakshi reunite and make the journey back to India to fix the mess. In the course of Pooja’s stay, Shekar learns that Pooja was previously in a relationship with Nagaraj, who left her for a better life overseas, a betrayal that Vijay has not forgiven or forgotten. As tensions escalate with the arrival of nearby villagers, intent on revenge for the attack on their own family of tigers, Shekar attempts to keep Nagaraj at arm’s length from the family. The truth soon emerges. Against all expectations, Shekar proposes to marry Pooja, and she agrees, and the family is united in harmony once more. Now that his sister is content, Vijay sacrifices his rage, and he and Meenakshi become husband and wife, sending the story to an upbeat conclusion.
“Endrendrum Kadhal” is a charming confection of a romcom that mixes feels, desi culture and cute desi in love against international kent stretches to create a winning package. Against the backdrop of an enduring cross-cultural quandary, this film sheds light on love, loyalty, and the sacrifices we make for ourselves and others. Its blend of emotional overload and shameless uplift, anchored by a squishy emotional centre and a vibrant musical palette, delivers an oft-turbulent but undeniably sensational trip. Though at times a bit predictable, it offers a fun, feel-good movie theatre experience that romantic comedy fans will thoroughly enjoy.
