“Four Friends” or 4 Friends is a 2010 Malayalam comedy-drama directed by Saji Surendran, starring Jayaram, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya, and Meera Jasmine, with a cameo by Kamal Haasan. The film follows four terminally ill patients who form an unexpected friendship and choose to live their remaining days to the fullest, leading to a life-changing journey of love, laughter, and loss.

Roy, a wealthy businessman with blood cancer, Surya, a street-smart MBA student with liver cancer, Amir, a small-time underworld thug with bone cancer, and Gauri, a young medical student with lung cancer, meet at Pratheeksha Hospital where they are all receiving treatment. They find common ground in their fight. Surging chemistry makes them undertake an adventurous journey where they travel to Malaysia with a desire to reunite Surya with his girlfriend. During their journey, they discover joy, love, and hope, alleviating their painful state of existence, if only for a moment. Their friendship grows deeper and deeper, until the tragic moment when one of them, Amir, is killed under still unexplained circumstances.

The remainder of the story is much different in tone as the friends come to terms with the loss and seek out the truth about Amir’s death. What started out as a whimsical adventure acquires a weightier dimension as it becomes a quest for justice and closure. Their friendship is put to the test as revelations come to light and they confront emotional and moral quandaries. Ultimately, it’s the remaining friends that draw power from one another, not only to come to terms with their affliction, but to avenge their fallen friend and serve his murderer the punishment he deserves.

“4 Friends” incorporates comedy, drama, elements of crime and suspense for a beautiful story about the importance of friendship and appreciating life. Jayaram and Kunchacko Boban, in particular, add warmth and depth with their graceful performances.
