Gemini

“Gemini” (2002) by Saran is a cop action flick made popular in Kollywood. It features Vikram and Kiran Rathod in the lead roles. The film focuses on Leela’s daughter Manisha, Gemini, a gangster, who wins Manisha’s love without her ever learning of his criminal past. Upon his release from prison, he embarks on a journey to demonstrate that he’s truly changed and win back her trust.

Teja, the alternate name for this species of gangster, is a product of North Madras, characterized by his predatory, animalistic behaviour. He and his gang violently enter a court hearing and murder another accused, Jeeva, who is part of a rival gang headed by Gemini. After this, for revenge, Gemini kills Jeeva's murderer and takes his place, igniting a rivalry between him and Teja over control. Pandian's mother, Annamma, seeks revenge as well, planning to poison Teja's gang.

As Gemini finds himself falling for college student Manisha, he attempts to gain more control over the market opposed by Teja, who recruits the help of Gemini’s right-hand man to stop his nefarious schemes. Police officer Singaperumal arrests both dons but then comes up with an ingenious plan to make them fight it out themselves. They trick Singaperumal into their release by pretending to reform.

After Manisha discovers that Gemini is the bad boy, she’s angry and heartbroken until he reforms his rakish ways to win her affection back for good. Teja is then apprehended for drug trafficking. After being freed by a corrupt cop who we later find out was bribed by Teja, Teja tries to get Gemini to start committing crimes again, which results in even more bloodshed. In a climax sequence, Teja’s dressed as Gemini gets accidentally shot. There’s plenty of other character development, from Gemini’s friendship with the quirky Diva to a charm school fiasco, but ultimately Gemini finds fulfilment in life with Manisha.

“Gemini” is an exhilarating Kollywood crime action drama. The movie takes audiences into brutal gang wars, revenge and redemption, and hard, kinetic action and soulful humanity collide. Gemini’s path from violent gangbanger to responsible boyfriend provides a surprising blend of brutality, romance, and redemption.
