Kalaignan is a thriller crime film by G.B. Vijay from 1993. It stars Kamal Haasan, Bindiya and Sivaranjani. The story follows Inderjeet, a renowned singer who ends up being the main suspect behind a string of murders of his female admirers. Divya comes to the city hell-bent on finding out what happened to her sister and tracking down the city’s latest serial killer before they strike again.
Indrajith, a Tamil pop singer, finds himself under suspicion for the murder when one of his dancers, Sandhya, is killed. As the public enters into a trial by social media, Divya, Sandhya’s sister, looks into the case, reaching out to Sandhya’s manager, Harichandra Prasad, who has conflicting views on Sandhya. Dhyan is a member of a leftist student union, and when Divya stages an attack on a bar as part of an anti-liquor campaign, Indrajith saves her from a beating. Indrajith hangs her, though he is ultimately indirect, as she is shot by the person who wears Indrajith’s overcoat. The police keep surveillance on Indrajith and try to scare Divya, suggesting that if she does not go away with Indrajith, he might be in danger.
Divya subsequently discloses that Sandhya was a volatile drug abuser who threatened suicide if he didn’t return the favour. The killer, who possesses damning photographs, blackmails Indrajith into visiting the homicide locations. Divya immediately falls for him. The unknown killer is eventually revealed to be Harichandra Prasad, who tries to kill Dr. Prabhavathy but is apprehended. Indrajith finds a hidden chamber with pictures of the victims and abducts Divya. His motive is exposed as having been jealousy over the women who snubbed Indrajith. In a car chase and shootout sequence, the killer is killed, Indrajith is vindicated and eludes capture, and the film ends with everybody living happily ever after.
