Kalapi

Kalapi is a  film of the historical drama genre which is directed by Manhar Raskapur and its story is written by Prabodh Joshi. Its story is based upon the life of Sursinhji Takhtasinhji Gohil who was the twenty-third Thakore of Lathi in Gujarat, who was further known as the poet "Kalapi." This  film explores his personal as well as  emotional struggles as he explores love, duty, and his unreal passion for poetry. The story begins with Kalapi's wedding to the Rajput dynasty’s princess Rama(Padmarani). This couple's romantic relationship is initially embarked by passion and poetry, with Kalapi(Sanjeev Kumar) clearing away his love for Rama and his arrogance for the royal duties thrusted upon him. Although he is crowned as  the thakore of Lathi, Kalapi detests his political life while gatekeeping his passion of writing poetries instead of ruling his kingdom. On the other hand, Rama sees this as an opportunity to fulfill her ambition of becoming queen. As time passes, Kalapi gets more disenchanted with his royal responsibilities, while Rama’s urge to acquire power grows over a period of time. Their relationship tends to become sour as Kalapi’s love for poetry intensifies and his displeasure of court life deepens. Further, Kalapi’s affections tend to shift when he falls in love with Mongi(Aruna Irani), who is the younger maid of Rama, whom he renamed as Shobhna. However, Kalapi’s involvement with Shobhna intensifies which leads to secret meetings in which poems are shared under moonlit nights. Later, Rama suspects about their affair and when she learns of Kalapi's betrayal, her jealousy and rage pushes herself to regain his affection and love. This film deeply adventures upon the emotional unrest and the tragic consequences of Kalapi’s love life which further culminate in his premature death at the age of twenty-six years under several mystic circumstances which are rumoured to be a result of Rama’s jealousy. This film is an engaging  tale of love, ambition, and the unreal passion which is portrayed through drama,romance and thrill.
