Sanjeev Kumar had lost his father at a very young age and lived with his mother and his three siblings as tenants in Mumbai. He was very eager to join the filmline as he was himself a movie buff and would save his money to see the latest films. The hunger for acting took him to theatre and he did a stage shows where he played the role of a 75 year old man once. Pursuing his ambition to act in films, he joined the Filmalaya Acting School . Sanjeev Kumar got a very small role in the film ' Hum Hindustani ' followed by the films Nishan, Alibaba and 40 Thieves, where his acting talent was recognised With his acting in the films Shikar and Sunghursh , he made a solid impact on the Hindi cinema after which there was no looking back for him and he had established as the Star in the Hindi Cinema. Sanjeev Kumar was a bachelor all his life .He had proposed to Actress Hema Malini but she had refused his proposal. It is said he made Jaya Bhaduri is his Rakhee Sister and thereafter refused romantic roles opposite to her. He was involved with actress Sulakshana Pandit who wanted to marry him, but he rejected her marriage proposal because he never got over his heartbreak after Hema Malini rejected is marriage proposal to marry her co-star Dharmendra . Ironically an actor who played elderly roles when he was young did not live to grow old. He was only forty seven when he died of heart ailment. His younger brother Nikul had died before him and his older brother Kishore had died 6 months after his death. He was at his peak when he passed away and ten of his films were already completed and were released only after his death. He had two films pending for completion and release one was Professor ki Padosan which was released much later in the year 1993. the other film that was released after his death was K. Asif's much delayed Love and God which was took over 20 years to complete and K. Asif himself died in 1971 the production came to a standstill and the film was released in an incomplete form in 1986 one year after Sanjeev Kumar had passed away. Sanjeev Kumar in his private life had drenched himself in alcohol. A bachelor who died of an acute heart ailment in 1985. November 6th 1985. Sanjeev Kumar was born with a congenital heart condition , and many members of his family hadnt lived beyond the age of 50. He had his first heart attack for which he underwent a bypass in the United States. At the age of 47, he suffered a massive heart attack which resulted in his death. He was a very good friend to the actor, producer/director Sachin Pilgaonkar.

Sanjeev Kumar made his debut in the Hindi Cinema with his film Hum Hindustani in 1960. He played the role of the lead in the film Nishan in 1965. In 1965 he played a prominent role opposite to the famous actor Dilip Kumar in Sunghursh. In the year 1970, the the film Khilona made him a Star . He went on to become popular after his two hits, Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972 opposite to Hema Malini and Manchali in 1973 opposite to Leena Chandavarkar. He started doing films with the well known director Gulzar in the early 70's . He did nine films with him and some of them were very poplular films that were hits like Aandhi in 1975, Mausam in 1975, Angoor in 1981 and Namkeen in 1982. These were the best films in his career span. He liked to play unconventional roles that challenged him as an actor. His role of Mirza, a chess obsessed Lucknowi Citizen of Lucknow in Satyajit Rays classic film Shatranj Ke Khiladi in 1977. In Naya Din Nai Raat in 1974, Sanjeev Kumar played role in nine characters an epic performance and was a remake of the film Navarathiri played by Sivaji Ganesan in 1964 which was also made earlier in Telegu language in 1966 by He is also remembered for his powerful roles in the two blockbuster films in Sholay in 1975 and Trishul in 1978. In the 1980's he started playing the supporting roles. He was truly a multi talented actor as he portrayed numerous roles irrespective of the age or the type of character he played with the same sensitivity or emotions. Sanjeev Kumar has acted in more than 100 films . Sanjeev Kumar was a prominent actor despite his orthodox looks. Infact he defied the film industry's unwritten rules and dared to establish himself as an actor by playing roles of old and aged man. He has essayed these characters after being one of the successful romantic hero in the films like Anhonee, Anamika , Seeta Aur Geeta and Manchali. Sanjeev Kumar was flooded with films opposite established actors. the Film that gave Sanjeev Kumar a tremendous success was his role in the film ' Khilona' in 1970. He played roled with a beaten track with his portrayals of two differently troubled husbands in the film' Dastak' for which he won his first National Award for the Best Actor . For his film ' Anubhav ', he won wide reviews . In his entire span in his filmline which was shortlived to his untimely death , he acted in genres ranging from romantic drama to thrillers unlike his peers he did not mind playing the unconventional roles that were non glamorous and his characters were way beyond his age . He is well remembered for his versatility and genuine portrayal of his character in every film that he did.
