Kantara

Kantara: Chapter 1 is an upcoming Indian Kannada-language mythological action drama film, written and directed by Rishab Shetty, who is also the main character. The film is produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the renowned Hombale Films banner, which continues its legacy of culturally based pan-India projects. It is a prequel to the blockbuster film Kantara, released in 2022. Kantara: Chapter 1 will reintroduce audiences, going centuries back in time to witness the genesis of the divine folklore and family heritage established in the former film. Kantara: Chapter 1 has the potential to be amongst India's most awaited films, and offers a combination of spirituality and folklore with action on a large scale.

With the story taking place during the Kadamba dynasty, around the 4th century CE, the film depicts a spiritual intertwining as humanity, nature and divine affairs connect one another. The story follows the life of Kaadubettu Shiva, a forest preservationist, chosen by mystical spirits like Panjurli Daiva and Guliga Daiva to protect the land and people. As ancient ways uphold traditions while the brutality of nature and greed respectively may conflict, Shiva must embrace his destiny and believe in the process that requires sacrifice, belief, and power to restore sacredness. The film depicts how folklore was born from real acts of courage and humanity's divine connection.

In the first-look poster, Rishab Shetty transforms himself into the ferocious and spiritually guided Shiva, brimming with raw power as he is seen roaring with divine rage inside the fire and ash. The imagery suggests an intense story based in ritual, mythology, and regional culture, and the film's look likely received attention all across India, orchestrating excitement.

Kantara: Chapter 1 will be in theatres on October 2, 2025, in seven languages (Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, English, among others), with the official trailer to arrive in early September 2025. This audience should take notice of it for its authentic representation of native folklore, combined with dramatic visuals, and immersive, emotionally intense storytelling. The film is currently being noticed for a small controversy over the portrayal of Daiva traditions, as some community members expressed they were dissatisfied with how their Daiva is represented in the film, while the makers assured everyone that the story serves as an honourable tribute to their tradition. All eyes are on this ambitious spiritual epic.
