"Kaththi" is a 2014 Tamil action thriller directed and written by A.R. Murugadoss. It features Vijay in a dual role with Samantha and Neil Nitin Mukesh. The movie is about a petty criminal who poses as a social activist but ends up battling for the right of a village to water.
Kathiresan (Vijay), a common criminal, breaks out from a Kolkata jail and wants to go abroad. He falls in love with a girl named Ankitha (Samantha). He then sees a man named Jeevanandham (Vijay), who is his spitting image, get shot by gangsters. To avoid the police, Kathir impersonates Jeeva. Initially, he wants to steal money, but he discovers the mission of Jeeva. Jeeva is a social activist who wages a battle against a corporate giant, Shirag (Neil Nitin Mukesh), who swindles villagers into parting with their land for a factory. The factory is likely to spoil the village water supply. Moved deeply, Kathir picks up Jeeva's cause and starts collecting evidence against Shirag. He struggles with corporate henchmen, withstands court battles, and outruns Shirag's tricks, while Jeeva in prison learns about Kathir's courageous efforts.
In order to gain national attention, Kathir cuts off the water supply to Chennai, compelling media coverage. His speech stirs hearts all over the country. In the meantime, Jeeva manages to escape from prison but is kidnapped by Shirag. Seeing Kathir's struggle on the television makes Jeeva inspired. When the final court verdict is delivered, Kathir saves Jeeva and kills Shirag. The court pronounces its judgement in favour of the villagers, ensuring their rights. Kathir then surrenders himself to the police, promising Ankitha that they will reunite once he has served his term.
A thrilling mix of action, emotion, and social commentary, "Kaththi" has Vijay delivering equally well in both these avatars, one of egotistical crime and the other of brooding warrior. The movie has all the right questions regarding corporate greed and water rights. A.R. Murugadoss has a high-octane, meaty story with a message that lingers.
