Magalir Mattum is a Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s feminist, satirical film from 1994, starring Revathi. Urvashi, Rohini and Nassar. The film centred on three women who all worked in the same office and suffered unrelenting harassment at the hands of their aggressive, inappropriate boss. Intent to stop his misbehaviour once and for all, they team up to take him down and band together to stand up and stand against his wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, one of these women, Janaki, and her friend Pappamma come to work at a fashion export business run by the sexually harassing G. K. Pandian, who hits on women in his office while being married. Janaki, a typist who became the primary breadwinner after her husband was laid off, and Pappamma, a housekeeper who supports her alcoholic husband, put up with the harassment as a result of their desperation. Sathya, a young designer, catches the eye of Pandian. At first, taking his harmless gestures the wrong way, she eventually spurned his romantic pursuit, having figured out his sinister motives. This earns her the respect of Janaki and Pappamma, and as their friendship grows, Janaki becomes bolder in standing up against unfair treatment.

When one day, Janaki inadvertently poisons Pandian’s coffee with rat poison meant for a neighbour, it becomes a bone of contention between the couple. Though he faints, he suffers no serious injury. Thinking that he has died, Janaki, Pappamma, and Sathya inadvertently smuggle the corpse of a terrorist instead. In an attempt to keep up with the rest of the world, when Pandian goes back to work, he blackmails the trio into spending time with him. The three defeated him and locked him away. Sathya now manages the office, and they create a better office culture. When their corporate overlord comes to visit, he heaps generous praise on them for their innovations and reams out Pandian for his moody shenanigans. He creates jobs for Janaki and Pappamma’s husbands and proposes marriage to Sathya, who accepts after showing him a portrait of her dream man, which looks like him.

Magalir Mattum is a smart, sassy satire that addresses the issue of workplace harassment in an inspiring and amusingly subversive way. By using comedy, the film is able to address urgent social issues, providing audiences with both laughter and critical insight. Its fierce female characters, captivating story, and relevant score are just some of the reasons why this stand-out film continues to impress today. In just the right measure of hilarity with heaviness, it serves up a potent and unforgettable documentary moment.
