Mahal is a 1949 film directed by Kamal Amrohi and produced by Bombay Talkies Studios and this film was Kamal Amrohi’s directorial debut.  Starring in the film are Ashok Kumar and Madhubala.  The songs from this film became perennial favorites as it also launched the Nightingale of India, playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Mahal is a story of a haunted mansion by a beautiful ghost(Madhubala). Hari Shankar (Ashok Kumar) gets obsessed by the beauty of the ghost after he moves into the mansion.  A story of reincarnation and an incomplete love, which an old gardener narrates to Hari Shankar. The story goes back into flashback 40 years ago where a lover had built this beautiful mansion for his lady love Kamini (Madhubala). The lovers met only at nights and before dawn the man leaves her. On a stormy night, his ship sinks and he dies.  Before he leaves he has confessed to Kamini that their love will remain eternal. Kamini also dies with an incomplete love.  Hari Shankar is shocked to see that the photograph of the lover is a replica of him and the haunted house has many memories of the two lovers who were separated by the natural elements.
