Mile Sur Mera Tumhara is a famous patriotic Indian music video released in 1988 to promote national integration and celebrate the idea of “unity in diversity.” The video, which was produced by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad with assistance from Doordarshan and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, was initially shown on Independence Day, immediately following the Prime Minister's address from the Red Fort. It swiftly rose to fame and became practically an Indian anthem.
Piyush Pandey wrote the lyrics for the song, which was composed by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and arranged by Louis Banks and L. Vaidyanathan. Each of the fourteen Indian languages included - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, and others - represented a distinct Indian region and culture.
The video brought together a wide range of Indian celebrities from various fields. It included actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Sharmila Tagore, Hema Malini, Waheeda Rehman, Tanuja, Revathi, KR Vijaya, Meenakshi Seshadri, Saira Banu, Om Puri, Amrish Puri, and Shabana Azmi. Musical depth was added by vocalists such as Kavita Krishnamurthy, M. Balamuralikrishna, and Lata Mangeshkar.
Dancers Mallika Sarabhai, Amala Shankar, and Sudharani Raghupathi contributed cultural diversity, and sports celebrities Prakash Padukone, Diana Edulji, Chuni Goswami, and EAS Prasanna made appearances. Artists like Mario Miranda and poets such as Javed Akhtar and Sunil Gangopadhyay called it home.
Each part of the song took shape not only visually but sonically, layering instruments and voices from multiple communities and languages to showcase their beauty while echoing the lyrics, reminding us that through diversity, India is one. As evocative as it is prescient, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara is still largely celebrated, enacted and admired today as an anthem of national pride and is arguably one of India’s most cherished cultural media.
