Their close relationship is tested and complicated when a captivating woman becomes part of their lives.
Kali and his sister Valli grew up as orphans, surviving by performing on the streets. Kali frequently yells at people who seem indifferent to the needy. Today, they reside close to a powerplant where Kali works managing a cable trolley transporting employees up and down the hill. Kali occasionally permits free rides, which the new engineer, Kumaran, finds objectionable. Kali violently halts the trolley mid-ride when Kumaran instructs Kali to stop. One day, Valli runs into Manga, a starving young woman who has come with her mother from a drought-stricken village.
Valli helps them, and Manga soon becomes close to Kali. After a playful encounter between Kali and Manga, Kali is suspended from work for not following the rules during an emergency. That night, while drunk, Kali is hit by a truck and loses his left arm. He loses his job, and with Valli’s support, Kali marries Manga. Meanwhile, Kumaran falls for Valli and asks for Kali’s permission to marry her. But Kali tries to arrange a marriage between Valli and a local grocer instead. Manga stops the engagement, and Valli secretly marries Kumaran. When Kali finds out, he feels betrayed but soon forgives his sister, accepting her choice and giving his blessing, healing old wounds.
