“Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam” is a bilingual Malayalam-Tamil drama film released in 2022 directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and produced by Mammootty Kampany and Amen Movie Monastery, starring Mammootty in a double role alongside Ramya Suvi, Ramya Pandian, and Ashokan.

The plot is about “James,” (Mammootty) a Malayali tour guide traveling back to Kerala with a batch of pilgrims after visiting Tamil Nadu's Velankanni. On the return journey, while others sleep on the bus, James asks the bus driver to stop in a deserted village. He enters a nearby house and starts acting as if he lives there: using fluent Tamil and playing a man named Sundaram, who had gone missing two years ago from that very village.

To everyone's surprise, including the villagers and his own family, James appears absolutely convinced that he is Sundaram. Even Sundaram's blind mother identifies him by actions and voice. The mysterious swap confuses both families, as James integrates into the Tamil family, learning the conversations, rituals, and memories he has no business knowing.

But fissures start to emerge. James becomes bewildered when he doesn't recognize a new temple or other new developments in the village. A visit to the barber astonishes him when he beholds his reflection, a face he doesn't relate to. His true friends and relatives, thinking that he is insane, plot secretly to dope him after his afternoon nap. But when he awakens, James recovers his identity, gets on the bus, and departs from the village; though what is actually happening never becomes clear.

“Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam” is a dreamy, slow-paced drama that dissolves the boundaries between reality and dreams. Lijo Jose Pellissery offers a special cinematic experience that is akin to being a moving painting. Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is visually poetic, intellectually stimulating, and provides an experience of one-of-a-kind storytelling mood which stays long after the screen disappears.
