Nizhal Nijamakirathu (1978) is a romantic drama by the director K. Balachander. It features Kamal Haasan, Sumithra, Shoba and Sarath Babu. The film follows Venkatachalam, who lives with his strong-willed sister Indumathi, a woman who despises men and swears off marriage, until Sanjeevi, Venkatachalam’s friend, enters their lives and unexpectedly falls for her.

LVenkatachalam and Indumathi are siblings living in a traditional household. Indumathi is strong-willed and firmly believes she’ll never marry, often expressing her dislike for men. Frequently visiting their home is Sanjeevi, a dear acquaintance of Venkatachalam. Indumathis confident attitude makes him laugh, and he sometimes pokes her, therefore starting several amusing disagreements. Though Indumathi secretly develops affection for Sanjeevi, her ego prevents her from revealing it. Thilagam, a sweet and naive little rural girl, joins the family as a maid. Venkatachalam is attracted to her modesty and finally becomes close to her.

When Thilagam becomes pregnant, Venkatachalam refuses to take responsibility, and she is thrown out of the house. Other faithful employees, Sanjeevi and Kasi, swoop in to assist Thilagam, always eager to help her. Sanjeevi makes arrangements for her to stay and asks Kasi to check after her. Thilagam gives birth to a boy. Eventually, Sanjeevi and Kasi help Venkatachalam see his blunder. Though he is prepared to accept Thilagam, she decides to stick with Kasi, who had helped her when she needed it most. Ultimately, Indumathi lets go of her pride and admits her love to Sanjeevi, which he happily accepts, and both tales now have closure and hope.

Nizhal Nijamakirathu is a layered romantic drama that explores themes of ego, love, betrayal, and redemption. Offering a mix of comedy and pathos, the film deftly balances emotional complexity with social critique. Its character-driven plot stresses moral reckoning and personal change. Still a thoughtful, and engrossing piece of Tamil cinema, the movie has interesting character arcs, memorable conversations and a realistic depiction of human flaws.
