Pattampoochi (1975) is a romantic tragedy drama by director A. S. Prakasam. Features Kamal Haasan, Jayachitra, Nagesh, V. K. Ramasamy and Manorama. The film is about Siva, a struggling artist, and Meena, his love, whose dream of a life together is shattered by societal pressures and Siva's relentless pursuit of fame, leading to a tragic end.

Siva, a promising yet troublesome artist known as "Sandiyar," falls in love with Meena, the daughter of a restaurateur. They decide to flee to Madras to get married, but Meena is a minor. They agree to wait in the meantime, as they have the recommendation of a kind woman, Kumari. Life becomes tough because Siva can never find work, and they are criticised because Meena is unmarried. After a producer insults Siva and tries to assault Meena, they're ostracised. Meena's family offers help, but she refuses. They perform in a musical, which is well-received, but Siva is told he'll never be a hero.

Desperate, they devise a suicide pact on the day of Meena's coming of age. However, Siva meets a woman who wants to make him a hero, but only if he marries her. Past insults influenced his decision to agree. Meena, heartbroken, arrives at the wedding to confront Siva, who is living his dream of becoming famous. Meena tells him how devastated she was, and in the tragic ending, she kills herself and stabs him, and then they die.

Pattampoochi is a beautiful romantic tragedy. This film explores the concept of personal and social responsibility through the lives of young lovers. It focuses on a powerful narrative related to sacrifice, ambition, and the grim consequences of making hard decisions about life. It was an excellent first-time movie for the calibre of newcomers, both the lead actor and director.
