Rasigan

Directed by veteran filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar, Rasigan was a typical 1994 action film. It stars Vijay, Sanghavi and Vichitra. The movie features Vijay and Anitha, two college students who are platonic friends and secretly in love, but can’t admit their love to each other. When Anitha’s father realises the closeness of their connection and tries to separate them, destiny intervenes with shocking turns that alter their destinies forever.

Vijay, who lives in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district with his doting grandmother Maruthayi, is in love with his neighbour Anitha, the daughter of police officer Raghavan, with whom he shares an open secret dislike. They occasionally show their mutual love, but on the surface, they maintain the pretence of being enemies. During a weekend away at a couple’s retreat, when the temptation becomes too great, they slip off to their cabin in the woods to consummate their love. When Raghavan discovers the truth of their romance, he is enraged and announces his transfer of Anitha to Madras. Later, he discovers Vijay’s love letters to Anitha and burns them in Vijay’s face. The letters include Anitha’s new home address, which leads Vijay to follow Anitha to Madras.

When he accidentally crashes an illegal porn shoot in Madras, Vijay causes an accident that results in the death of Naidu’s son, and he is stuck being the scapegoat. Raghavan pursues him, putting out a bounty. Vijay can evade police by narrow margins, but trouble waits in the wings as one of the fleeing manager’s cops gets killed in the process. Rani, an auto-rickshaw driver and former domestic worker, comes to his aid. Even after Raghavan arrests Vijay and finds out he’s innocent, he takes it upon himself to still protect Vijay. After Anitha gets kidnapped, Vijay saves her, and Raghavan kills Naidu, accepting Vijay and Anitha’s love.

Rasigan is an all-around exciting action movie, melding the seriousness of drama with the thrill of romance and intrigue. The movie is surprisingly good at melding action with emotion, sequences to emotional portraits of love and loyalty and perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds. This film is captivating from start to finish, with great performances and a terrific, that hooks you in and doesn’t let go. This combination of memorable action and emotional storytelling makes it a perfect watch for lovers of old Tamil cinema.
