Sadhurangam (1978), directed by Durai, is a crime drama film from the Tamil cinema. It features Rajinikanth, Srikanth, Jayachitra and Prameela. The film revolves around a traditional Brahmin family, where two brothers take contrasting paths, one is drawn into illegal activities, while the other is transformed by his wife's devotion. As tensions rise through love, jealousy, and personal downfall, the family's unity is put to the ultimate test.

In a traditional middle-class Brahmin household, a widowed mother (Pandari Bai) raises her two sons, Sundaresan, the quiet and honest elder, and Ram Kumar, the rebellious younger son who neglects his studies and misbehaves in college. While Sundaresan works as an accountant and is teased for his reserved nature, Ram causes trouble on campus and gets into conflict with a bold girl named Uma. Meanwhile, Ram Kumar gets into trouble at college after writing offensive graffiti about a girl named Uma. Uma and her father pretend she and Ram are in love to save their reputations, therefore forcing Ram to wed her.

At first, Ram despises Uma, but she slowly attempts to alter him. Her work finally pays off over the years. Ram develops into a responsible and loving husband. Sundaresan, under a man named Soma Sundaram, wanders into unlawful behaviour and begins to ignore Meenakshi. Uma discovers his secret and tells their mother. Pandari Bai confronts Sundaresan and urges him to leave his dishonest ways. Meenakshi, angry, moves out with her husband. Until his mother's death jolts him, Sundar's actions get worse with alcohol and partying. Feeling great remorse, Sundaresan confesses his crimes to the cops. Sundaresan finally finds redemption for his mistakes. While Ram and Umas' lives become more peaceful.

Sadhurangam, a gripping crime drama, explores the themes of family, ethics and personal change. It showcases intricate relationships among characters with complex personalities, and emotional depth. Its intelligent pacing, captivating performances, and dramatic power leave a mark. The story deftly mixes sentiment with reality, therefore creating a remarkable representation of how love, loss and atonement change human lives.
