Balakrishna, a classical dancUnder the direction of K. Viswanath's "Sagara Sangamam", a Telugu musical Dance film. It stars Kamal Haasan, Jaya Prada, Sarath Babu and S. P. Sailaja. The film follows Balakrishna, a talented Kuchipudi dancer, who gets an opportunity to perform at an esteemed classical dance festival. Two days before the event, his mother suddenly died, leaving him broken and unable to step on stage.
Balakrishna, or Balu, is an impoverished but talented classical dancer of kuchipudi, bharatanatyam and kathak styles. His straightforward integrity is what makes him unable to thrive in a society that rewards compromise. Madhavi, a rich classical dancer, sees his genius and champions him, getting him into a respected dance festival. Right before showtime, Balu’s favourite mom kicks the bucket, and heartbroken, Balu can’t play. Madhavi consoles him, and eventually Balu falls in love with her. When he eventually does give in to his emotions, he discovers that Madhavi has already been married, but separated. After her husband comes back, Balu backs off out of respect for marriage and sacrifices his love.
Years later, Balu, a bitter alcoholic, is a newspaper critic. He pens a scathing review of a dancer, Sailaja, and gets into a tussle. Madhavi, now widowed and Sailaja’s mother, reads the article and discovers Balu’s fate and his infinite love for her. Keeping her identity hidden, she requests Balu’s friend Raghu to come to her assistance and appoints Balu as her daughter’s dance instructor. When she finally unveils, Balu goes berserk. The movie concludes with Balu viewing Sailaja onstage, proud but frail. He dies on stage, stolen away quietly by Raghu. Madhavi trails behind, protecting him from the rain with an umbrella, weeping for the man who loved her till the end.
"Sagara Sangamam" is an incredibly poignant and exquisitely filmed mix of classical art and unpolished emotion. Its visceral depiction of love, sacrifice and lost dreams is devastating and moving. With its brilliant offbeat music, choreography and performances, the film rises above its story to become a timeless ode to Indian classical dance. With its soul and craftsmanship, it resonates with anyone who appreciates fire and art and fight.
